description: In this continuation of preparing your artwork for colour, we are going to colour the artwork, using one of the methods used in the comic industry.

Digital colouring - Part 2

Your line art should now be ready for the colouring process. If not please read part 1 of this tutorial Digital colouring part 1.

Make an extra layer below your line art, name it 'base colour'.

Now if your using the robin artwork then the colours you can find via any google search, colours for comics dont tend to be exact, they vary depending on the artist.
If you doing your own sketch then its totally upto you.

Select the brush tool and make sure opacity and flow are both 100%
Fill in all the parts of your sketch on the new 'base colour' layer till it is all blocked in. If you go over the lines or over a colour, dont worry just use the eraser.
-- Tip --
You can resize the brush quickly using the [ key to shrink it and the ] key to increase the size.

You should have something which looks like this.

Now create another layer above base colour, name this 'shade 1'. Set this layer to 'Multiply'
Using that exact same colours as the base coat, use your brush and paint over the areas you want shading to appear. As you see it creates a natural shade for that colour.
If the shade is too dark you can lighten it using the opacity feature above the layer tools.

Paint over your entire artwork filling in where you want all the shading to appear, you should finish with something like this. photoshop digital art

-- Tip --
You can blend the shade in with your base colour by using the smudge tool, zooming it and slowly blending in the two colours by dragging the shade into the base colour.

Now create another layer above the current, name this one 'highlight 1' and set the layer mode to 'screen' modify the opacity if needed.
Do the exact same as with the shade layer except this time you want to paint in the highlights.

You should have something which looks like this.

Now you may be happy with the way it looks right now, but you can keep increasing the amounts of shades and highlights, by adding more layers and adjusting the layer opacity and the brush opacity.

You may also just choose colours out the colour picker, rather than getting the shades and highlights via the layer modify.

Here is mine after using the above techniques.
